Connor Fellowships are awarded to current grad students seeking to make a positive impact on the Art Ed Department here at City College, and on the larger citywide art education community! This post is part of a series introducing Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 Connor Fellows.
Meet Mariah Smith, who is supporting the department (and the environment!) with a series of community events:
“Better for Wear is a project geared toward community engagement within the Art Education Department, as well as the promotion of the department and its participants. Put simply, it
proposes a trade. Folks bring in their well worn textiles to be mended in exchange for a story–or any
reason for attachment to the textile. Inspired by mending galleries like that of Rachel Smith & Sam Bennet and Tom of Holland, we will create a mending gallery for the CCNY ArtEd Department. Adding
the narrative element to the images of mended textiles speaks to one of the strengths of this program as it roots Art Education in the exploration of identity and social narrative. By documenting the mends and and their respective narratives we’ll amass a collective portrait: varied in color, style, and story.
Stay tuned for mending events and workshops around the city throughout the summer!”
