In a celebration of Democracy and Art Education, CCNY alumni and current students gathered for our first–and hopefully annual–Election Day Professional Development workshop. Together, we explored ideas of democratic, justice-oriented teaching and art-making with workshops by alumni Will Goertzel and Kelly Martin. Marit kicked us off with an exploration of the Nari Ward “We the People” artwork and some blackout poetry. SoHee and Anne facilitated an organic discussion about how we move ideas into practice in our teaching. On a tense day for our country, we escaped into the world of Shepard 303 where we were reminded that arts educators have the tools we need to creatively critique systems of power, listen and affirm young people, and imagine new worlds together.
